World No.2 & 9 time grandslam champion Serena Williams set up a clash with Russian Dinara Safina in the Australian Open Final 2009 after defeating in form World No.4 Elena Dementieva 6-3, 6-4 in the semifinal.She has previously won the Australian Open in odd years i.e in 2003, 2005 & 2007, it happened to be a coincidence but that's a fact & therefore she is the hot favourite to win her fourth consecutive odd year Australian Open Championship.

World No.3 Dinara Safina is making her second grandslam final appearance since the French Open final in 2008(lt.Ana Ivanovic), after defeating World No.7 & in form Vera Zvonareva in the semifinal.But Safina has improved a lot after her loss at the French open finals making semifinal appearances or better at three of four grandslams & also played eight finals winning four of them, she has also become more strong mentally.

The Winner of the Australian Open final will also see one of the women taking over the World No.1 ranking, if Serena wins it would be return to the top after her US Open final victory in 2008 but for Dinara Safina it would be historic.

World No.7 & last year's AO runner-up Jo Wilfried Tsonga fought off James Blake of USA in straight sets to enter the quarterfinal of Australian Open 2009.He plays Fernando Verdasco of Spain who shocked World No.4 Andy Murray in tough 5 sets, being 2 sets to 1 down.Tsonga rose to fame after he surprisingly made to finals of Australian Open 2008 defeating Rafael Nadal in straight sets in the semifinals, eventually losing to Novak Djokovic in 4 sets.He made it to top ten by winning the ATP Paris Masters(def. Nalbandian) thereby qualified for the year ending Tennis Masters Cup.

World No.15 Fernando Verdasco stunned the 4th seed Andy Murray in 5 set thriller, who was a pre tournament favourite & thereby entered his first grandslam quarter-final.Verdasco played a major role in Spain's Davis Cup victory over Argentina in the finals, winning both the rubber matches thereby securing a 3-1 victory.In one of the matches he made a comeback victory after being 2 sets down.He is currently performing well on all surfaces.

Tsonga & Verdasco have never played each other, but the match will be exciting & interesting to watch.
